Cheese carriers in white uniforms and coloured straw hats bring the round Edam cheeses to the square on wooden sledges\, sometimes by boat over the canal. Traders and farmers seal the deal with the traditional handjeklap (hand-clapping) before the cheeses are weighed in the Kaaswaag of 1778. The whole show lasts about two hours; the best moment to arrive is 10:15\, when the sledges come in. DESCRIPTION:Gouda Candlelight Festival\n\n\n\nGouda by Candlelight is one of the oldest festivals of lights in the Netherlands. In the evening\, 1\,500 candles are lit behind the windows of the historic Town Hall and thousands more behind the windows of downtown properties. There are also all kinds of activities\, such as the Winter Fair\, walks\, concerts\, shows and performances in the Gouda Theatre\, museums\, churches and on the streets. The highlight is the lighting of the lights in the Christmas tree between 7pm and 8pm. Gouda always receives the Christmas tree as a gift from its Norwegian sister city Kongsberg. \n\n\n\nTravel to Gouda by Candlelight\n\n\n\nDue to crowds\, it is best to travel to Gouda by public transport. The city is easily accessible by public transport. By train\, you can easily travel from anywhere in the Netherlands to the Gouda intercity station. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the station in Christmas atmosphere to the city centre\, station exit Centrum. \n\n\n\nComing by car anyway?From the A12 or N207 (from the direction of Alphen aan den Rijn)\, signs will direct you to a car park on Heuvellaan and Gentseweg. From this point\, shuttle buses will run continuously from 4pm to the centre and back to the car park. The last shuttle bus leaves from the Bloemenkiosk (opposite the bus/train station centre side) at 11.30pm. \n\n\n\nFrom the N228 or N207 (from the direction of Bergambacht)\, you can also park at the GOUDasfalt car park (Gouderaksedijk 32\, Gouda) and use the Gein ferry to cross to the centre from 11am to midnight. On arrival\, cross the street and then walk into town via West or Oosthaven.

There are direct connections from Amsterdam\, Utrecht\, Groningen and The Hague\, among other places. With the Dutch Countryside card you can travel by train from Amsterdam to Almere station. \n\n\n\nFrom Almere Centrum Station you have three possibilities to travel to the Expo. From Almere Centrum you can walk within 5 minutes to the Esplanade\, where you take the boat to Floriade Expo 2022.
