Zaanse Schans Bike Tour: Guided Cycling Through the Windmill Polders (2026)

The Zaanse Schans is small, but the flat green polder behind it — dikes, ditches, lone windmills, cows and wooden villages — is the real Dutch countryside, and the way to see it is by bike. A small-group guided bike tour starts in Zaandijk, right across the river from the mills, and covers about 15 km in 2.5 hours: the Zaan dike, the mills of the Schans (one visited inside), Zaandijk’s merchant houses and the quiet polder villages, with a clog-making and cheese demonstration on the way. Price from about €55 including bike, guide and windmill entry; e-bikes on request.

The route

You meet the guide at the bike rental at Weeshuisland 62 in Zaandijk, a 10-minute walk from Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station and a 15-minute walk from the Schans (over the Julianabrug). From there the route follows the Lagedijk along the Zaan with the mills across the water — the postcard view — then crosses to the Schans for a visit inside a working windmill, the clog workshop and the cheese farm. The second half leaves the tourists behind: the Guisweg and the polder paths through Westzaan, where the paltrok sawmill De Schoolmeester and the paper mill of 1692 still stand, back along the Zaan to Zaandijk. The pace is easy and the roads are flat, separate bike paths or quiet dike roads; children from about 12 can join.

Getting to the start

Train from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans (17 minutes), then a 10-minute walk to Weeshuisland. By car: park at the Zaanse Schans (€15) and walk over the bridge, or use the free parking in Zaandijk village. Morning departures are the quietest; check the exact time when booking.

Tip: the polder is exposed — on a windy day the way back along the dike is the hard part. Ask for an e-bike if you are not a regular cyclist.

Cycling from Amsterdam instead

If you would rather cycle the whole way, guided countryside bike tours leave from central Amsterdam, take the free ferry across the IJ and ride 30 km through Waterland or the Zaan region with a cheese farm and windmill stop — a full half day, for fit riders.
